Hair Help: Lift and Volume

Hair with volume can elevate an entire look, and there are so many easy ways to give limp hair a lift.  Some might require a trip to the salon, but there are plenty that are simple to do at home.

Color can be a factor in creating the impression of volume, or a lack of it.  Flat, monochromatic color makes for flat hair, and adding depth to one’s color using highlights, lowlights, or both, creates the impression of greater volume.  Highlights and lowlights also accentuate the movement of hair.  Highlights and lowlights don’t have to be dramatic changes—one or two shades lighter or darker will do the trick.

Layers help volumize in the same ways that good color does, and in addition add more actual lift, especially if the hair has a little curl or a slight wave.  And an overall trim helps as well.  Very long hair can weigh itself down, both visually and in actuality.

If color and cut aren’t enough, or for a last minute instant lift at home, root volumizers can be a quick fix.  Root volumizers are applied directly at the roots of damp hair.  Don’t overdo it with these products, as overuse may backfire.
